When opened in 1896 this narrow-gauge railway (1067 mm / 3’6”) dramatically changed people’s lives by connecting the isolated valley of Setesdal and the town of Kristiansand. For nearly 70 years the railway transported people, livestock and various products from the valley.

The railway was closed down in 1962 but reopened as a heritage railway two years later, as the country’s first museum railways. Your coach takes you to the station of Grovane where you board the steam train. The staff onboard the train are all volunteers with a passion for the heritage railway. Today 7.97 km out of the original 78 km track is open. The steam train winds its way through the valley and tunnels, across dams and along a timber slide.

After the delightful 20 minute journey to Røyknes station you board the coach and return to the ship. A very popular tour, not only for the trainspotter.
